Barack Obama: The Hope of Democracy The hope of democracy is that there is hope. Hope that things can change. Hope that people will find their voice and somehow their voices will be counted. Hope that the positivity and the productivity in people will find a way to win. But this change does not happen by itself. It happens by participation. An individual may become the symbol and lead but it is the followers who finally make it happen. And it can happen only against great resistance and odds, because such a change would entail exchange of power from the hands of a few to the hands of the people.

America has been for sometime and is presently largely controlled by corporate interest groups and its defense sector. The president and the congress has almost without exception been influenced and many a times dictated by the desires of these two forces. Even the American mainstream media , being huge corporate entities, is a part of this third force in American politics. But the incidents during the reign of George W Bush have left the American people aghast and also more aware. Thus, making the time ripe for change.

Out of the two political parties at play the Republican Party is the party of the rich and the conservative and therefore stands completely for the status quo. The hope lies with the Democratic Party, the party of the workers. Within the Democratic Party itself there are two groups. The group led by the Clintons is democratic only in name and in the phrasing of its policy and political discourse. The other group involving the k
Kennedys is the idealistic one and therefore more inclined towards change. This group, of course, is now lead by Barack Obama.

As it stands in Barack Obama America has its much needed chance for change. Obama comes across as very intelligent, ambitious man committed to bringing about this change. He obviously has been visionary enough identify the time and to capitalize on it. He has now during this campaign lead a grass roots movement bringing new people into politics and raising record campaign fund through ordinary Americans. His popularity, of course, is maximum amongst the aware and the idealistic lot. His colour, though, has been a hindrance for him in bringing out a lot of white working class Americans, while, the black America will back him to death.

The resistance that he faces has been no less than such a movement for change would expect. Right now Hillary Clinton is the face of this resistance. She and her husband have had their influences worked out while they were in the White House. But the most important of their area of influence has been the mainstream electronic media, especially given its importance during campaign. On the other hand, though, Obama has been helped by the democratic digital media. Obama, if he wins the democratic nomination, will face John McCain for the general elections due in November. But this prolonged race for the Democratic nomination has now entered a crucial phase. Next up are the primaries in North Carolina and Indiana. If Obama wins both the states fairly comfortably then the nomination is his and most probably the contest will stop there. But if Clinton wins even one of them then this contest might go up to the democratic convention in August. This can seriously damage the unity of the Democratic Party and its chances in the general elections.

Now it’s up to the people of this democratic country to make their call. They can either fructify the hope of democracy or miss their opportunity. They can either take power in their own hands or let themselves be taken for a ride. Any which way they will be writing their own history. Because the moment that is upon them is historic.

Once in a long while there comes a time ripe for change. It doesn’t come easily. And it may not necessarily come again.

Indeed, hope is the ultimate solace for mankind. Especially in this I-don’t-give-a-damn-for-others era, hope is the only straw which a common man can cling to... to take him out of the ruts - personal, professional and global.

As for Barack Obama being portrayed as the the ideal candidate for the welfare of the Americans or America, by the author, only time will tell whether he leads America (If at all he gets thru this acid test of voting, which I don’t think will happen) towards true democracy or invents his own version of democracy! Just like the Clintons, as the author has pointed out.

Note: When Clinton (Bill) was standing at this very juncture, the Americans trusted him with their hope and votes. Ironically, now the sentiments have changed (as per the author) >>> The group led by the Clintons is democratic only in name and in the phrasing of its policy and political discourse.

Anyway, the only thing that remains unchanged and unfazed is Hope. So, lets hope that the hope of millions of hopeful Americans doesn’t go waste.

How can anyone call Barack Obama an agent for Hope? What does he really stand for? How does he propose to accomplish all his promises without bankrupting America?

If he were to win and abandon Iraq, what happens to Afghanistan? Do we just let extremist rule the day?

We America do have Hope, but I’m afraid none of the three current candidates will provide it. I hope we get through the next 4 years quickly, with a minimum amount of damage and find a good qualified leader next time.

Maybe even we can select a candidate without being manipulated by the lamestream media.

in political science there is a particular school known as the ELITIST school..the theorists argue that in any given society there are a set of people, who by their qualities(inborn or accquired)are the leaders...
the masses only choose one set of elites ,generally in a democratic set-up ,through the medium of elections....

in a ”market capitalist democracy”,the lobbies are very powerful..the PENTAGON,INDUSTRY etc....
therefore change is only a farce..

as for the brilliant obama- according to a recent survey americans are voting according to their percieved understandings...therefore the more educated click with obama and the lesser ones with hillary...obviously paying less regard to normal discourse...
inequalities are increasing(everywhere),the americans can only enjoy the benefits only at the expense of others(iraq, iran etc..)the best is at the top of the pyramid,to remain there one has to keep its grip of hegemony intact.the americans need testfields to test their super-advanced weapons and places like afghanistan, iraq provide that opportunity..
a fighter f-16 costs much more than foodgrains or medicines..rest follows.no matter who comes into power even the ENLIGHTENED OBAMA he will have to mould himself...

even the B.J.P when it came into power in india it abandoned its three most cherished goals...the RAM MANDIR..
UNIFORM CIVIL-CODE,and the REVOKING OF ARTICLE 370 OF THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION...

its tough to be a saint and every realist understands this..as a president national intrest comes 1st.i.e to stay on the top(numero uno)
as for the masses THEY ARE BLISSFUL IN THEIR IGNORANCE...at least DEMOCRATICALLY....
its hard to WALK THE WALK AND TALK THE TALK............

Just what you said Aneez, hope is precisely the only hope left, what else can common man hold on to? BUT THEN EVEN THE ULTIMATE OF POWERS LIES IN OUR HANDS UNTIL WE GIVE UP OUR RIGHT TO FRANCHISE AND CHOOSE THE RIGHT REPRESENTATIVE WHO BELIEVES IN DEMOCRACY HIMSELF AND WANTS TO ENSURE ONE FOR US AS WELL.

hi Aneez, i didn’t say and i don’t know whether obama is the ’ideal’ candidate for change. but he definitely is a candidate for change. while it is true that the clintons broke the faith that people had in them but then there is a big difference between the clintons and obama.apart from the fact that clintons are serial liars and unprincipled characters they never fought the elections for such a change. it is to be seen how good obama will turn out to be as president and how he will deliver and implement his vision but the man to my mind deserves a chance.

Hi Lewis, I don’t know how you cannot call him an agent for hope? Here is a man who has run a clean campaign with a significant amount of grassroots funding, brought in new people to the polling booth, and has a vision for change. He talks hope and change and till now has walked hope and change. Now how exactly he goes about doing his job as president is another matter. My guess is that he is not a stupid guy. Rather he is intelligent, aware, principled and well intentioned person. To me it seems that he has a good, confident, analytical, decisive mind. This I am sure will help him a lot in trying to find and implement solutions. I understand that cynicism can be justified but it is hardly productive.

Abhishek, Obama does have a very catchy slogan with ”Change You Can Believe In.” But, just what is that change? What exactly is he offering in the way of hope?

Would he raise taxes significantly? Would he stifle production with restrictive taxation on profits? Will he push for more socialist programs and restrict more freedoms and liberties than we have already lost?

My opposition has nothing to do with the mans intelligence. I agree, he is a very intelligent person, well educated and articulate. He is a very charismatic speaker and has an impressive presence before an audience.

But, when it comes to supplying specifics of just what his hope and change are, I hear silence.

Lewis, Obama very clearly stands for a fundamental change in the way politics is practiced in Washington. He has not taken money from lobbyists and therefore will function differently. The big thing about such a change is that it depends upon the intention and the understanding of the person in question. now it is upto every one figure that out. to my mind just looking at it from the framework of specific issues and policies is rather narrow. though Obama has very clearly provided the specifics of his policies and it is out their in the open. I am sure you could find out the specifics on the net.

Abhishek, I appreciate what you say. Obama does have a catchy slogan and portrays a degree of purity in his claimsof not taking money from lobbyists and PACs. Problem is, lobbyists and PACs don’t contribute all that much to campaigns anyways, they contribute to the winners after the election is over to gain favor for their particular group.

Basically, it’s slick but meaningless talk.

What he isn’t telling is just now much of his campaign is being financed by certain industry sectors, especially some that will demand favor if he wins to counter some of his so called promises.

Not supplying any specifics as asked as to why you feel Obama is the best candidate for the highest office in the land is dodging the question and leaves one feeling that you don’t know any specifics, either.

It is not up to me to figure out why he is the best, it is incumbant upon you and other supporters to broadcast why he is the better candidate and draw others in.

Telling others to go discover specifics on their own loses potential supporters.
